The Connecticut route market

Connecticut is small, wealthy and densely populated, sitting between two of the largest metropolitan markets in the country. I-95 runs the coast from New York toward Rhode Island and I-91 runs north through Hartford, and much of the state’s freight is moving between Boston and New York rather than originating locally.

That produces short stem miles and high stop density in the corridor towns, and a quieter, more spread-out business in the northwest and northeast corners.

What a Connecticut route costs, and what moves the number

FedEx route businesses are priced on cash flow, not revenue and not route count. Across the route businesses Route Advisors currently has listed, asking prices run from 1.6x to 6.0x annual cash flow, median 3.6x; FedEx Ground P&D packages specifically run 2.7x to 5.4x.

Connecticut’s minimum wage is $16.94 an hour, one of the highest in the country and above neighbouring Massachusetts at $15.00. Labour is the dominant cost in a P&D package, so whether a package already pays at market is the first question a lender will model.

Density is the offsetting advantage and should be quantified: stops per mile, packages per hour and route completion times are what justify a Connecticut premium.

Current Connecticut availability

Current Connecticut inventory includes a two-run FedEx solo linehaul package in North Haven at $449,000, a two-run linehaul package at $495,000, and a Mattress Firm delivery route in Windsor at $75,000 on $40,560 cash flow.
