Virginia’s freight runs on two different engines. The Hampton Roads port complex at Norfolk is one of the deepest on the US East Coast, and northern Virginia’s data-centre corridor in Loudoun and Prince William counties has become one of the densest commercial delivery markets in the country. Between them, I-81 carries north-south truck freight along the Shenandoah Valley.
FedEx route businesses are priced on cash flow, not revenue and not route count. Across the route businesses Route Advisors currently has listed, asking prices run from 1.6x to 6.0x annual cash flow, median 3.6x; FedEx Ground P&D packages specifically run 2.7x to 5.4x.
Virginia’s minimum wage is $12.77 an hour, mid-range nationally and rising on a legislated path. Northern Virginia is a high-cost labour market that competes with Washington DC, while southwest Virginia is not – a package from one does not price like a package from the other, and a state-level average describes neither.
Current Virginia inventory includes a ten-route FedEx P&D package based in Ashland at $783,000 on $223,991 cash flow, and a ten-route package in Norfolk at $350,000.
